Biographies are like assholes. All bands have one but no one's really interested in them. We therefore have two versions of our biography. You are now on the page with the factual one. Boring. If you want the other one, click here.

<STARSPAWN> was formed in 1990 under the name of SPAWN by long time friends Steven Redant (aka. Stel, bass player of defunkt Belgian Hardcore Punk band Subversion), Francis Depuydt (Guitarist of Belgian Rock band Tribe), Jan Vandenbergh (aka. Beejay, guitars) and Johan Wuyckens (aka. Foob, vocals). We had no drummer at the time, so Stel spent hours painstakingly programming drumtracks, while making certain they sounded as human as possible.

Francis left about a year after the band's formation on an amicable basis to focus on his Rock band. They had just signed a new record deal.

Now a trio (plus a drum computer) and still under the name of SPAWN, we recorded two demotapes (yes, cassettes!) on a small Fostex analogue four track studio. Despite the basic setup it got us favourable reviews in the specialized press. We also participated in a number of Belgian Rock contests (winning the first Paenhuys Park Happening contest) and played small Belgian venues.

In 1995 we changed our name to <STARSPAWN> to avoid confusion with a German Hardcore Punk band called Spawn that had just emerged.

New recordings started in 1998 on a digital eight track studio for our debut CD. The track listing consisted of new orginal material but also a few re-recorded versions of old demo material, and one cover track. The album 'Four Pound Ransom' (a fun title invented by Beejay) was released independently and featured artwork painted by Foob. Again we received favourable and sometimes even rave reviews in the specialised press.

In 2000, just before the official release of the CD, we were for the first time joined by a drummer. Philip Marivoet, again a long time friend, had just witnessed the end of his Rock band Plush and was swiftly adopted by <STARSPAWN> where his presence was immediately translated in new and exciting material. A new number of live performances also followed.

Not convinced of his vocal qualities Foob left the band in 2005. The rest of us continued as an instrumental outfit, playing a handful of gigs and writing some new material. In 2010 Stel convinced Foob to reclaim his position behind the mic. Not long after new recording sessions started (this tame using Reaper software) for a new as yet untitled CD.

The band is also rehearsing a new live set.
