Music videoclip
My role: Director / Flash Animator
Agency: Foob
Used Software: Fireworks / Flash / Première
Info: This rather silly videoclip for the Dance Metal project 'UNK!' (with the support of 'The Prodigy' guitarist Gizz Butt) was a good exercise in Flash animation techniques. It was created entirely in Flash using a load of cut-out images of classic toys and landscapes. Watch the robots and tin spaceships come to life on Youtube.

My clients generally are agencies that are specialized in Online Marketing and/or Web Development or the creation of applications that need a graphical user interface on PC, smartphone, iPad, etc....

This is an overview of some recent freelance work and in reversed chronological order some of the most noteworthy older projects I did as employee of LBi (and its precursor DAD) during my ten year stay there.

Most of the older projects are no longer online or at least not in the way I designed them. Screenshots of some of these projects can be seen on this page. For legal reasons I also cannot show a number of the more recent designs as long as they are in development.

  2011
  Walloon Government

  Portail Wallon des Entreprises
  My roles:
- Lead Interface Designer / Webdesigner
- Media Player interface designer

  Agency:
K Company

  Description:
Having heard of my departure from LBi in 2011, the Liège based agency K-Company contacted me only weeks later, because they already knew my proven track record on large scale B2B and B2C projects for corporate clients and because of my work for several European, Belgian Federal and local governments.

To create the look & feel for this project, I cooperated closely with K-Company's eBI Consultant Ingrid Rennoir for a perfect match between Usabilty and Design. There also were accessibilty constraints that had to be taken into account, as well as the client's request to make all designs fit into the 960 Grid system. So, the look & feel had to be professional and aesthetically pleasing, but how the site would perform later on in terms of Usabilty and Accessibilty was even more important. It's a clear case of design that has to serve a purpose. With a few minor changes the designs were easily accepted by the Minister's cabinet and with my part of the job done, the project has now gone into the development phase.

"Portail Wallon des Entreprises" is a preliminary title. The official launch date is somewhere in 2014. This unfortunately means I am not allowed to show any designs until that time.

  Used software and motivation:
Because of the relatively large number of screens that had to be designed and the fact that minor changes were frequent as a result of the collaborative and exploratory way of working between myself, Ingrid Rennoir and Project Manager Germis Cassian, Fireworks was the most ergonomical choice for the job thanks to its ability to make changes in all designs at once.

  2005 > 2006
  Studio 100 / Plopsaland

  Plopsa websites
  My roles:
- Lead webdesigner
- Usability / Ergodesigner
- HTML integrator (statisc version)

  Agency:
LBi Belgium (Lost Boys)

  Description:
For the three websites of these Studio 100 owned theme parks I worked solo to determine the look & feel and produced all design deliveries. Because there was no Usability Expert on the case, I also took care of the ergodesigns (wireframes) during the designphase. The client specifically requested a Flash site, so the structure of the screens had to be well thought through. This posed an interesting challenge in terms of both usability and design.

Next to the designs for the Flash site, I was also asked to create a static website for each theme parc to serve as a temporary solution while the development of the Flash site was ongoing. For that version I basically did everything, from the usability over the creation of the look & feel to the actual creation of the static HTML/CSS pages, the content upload and the webmastering. This version was online for about half a year. The Flash version of the websites was online for over 4 years and was replaced by a new website in 2011.

  Used software and motivation:
Because of the better compatibility with Flash, all designs had to be created in Fireworks for reasons of efficiency and cost-control. Using Fireworks as opposed to another design package prevents an almost complete design-reconstruction when the interface is imported in Flash.

  2005
  Ubizen / Cybertrust

  Extranet / Security Dashboard
  My roles:
- Lead webdesigner
- Ergodesigner

  Agency:
DAD (Digital Age Design)

  Description:
In 2005 I was embedded in Ubizen's development team as LBi's webdesign- and ergodesign expert for the creation of an extranet that allowed clients to administrate the security of their transactional websites. Based on preliminary wireframes and functional documents from Ubizen's Project Managers and IT-managers I first created new ergodesigns (wireframes) before taking care of the creation of a clean and clear interface. Emphasis was on the visual weight of each page object and on how to treat each of them for an optimal scannabilty and readability. The designs also included a so-called Dashboard that had to give the user an easy to understand graphical presentation of the most important information in their security database.

I later also took care of skinning the designs to fit the new branding guidelines of Cybertrust.

  Used software and motivation:
To safeguard the crispness and the integrity of the look & feel throughout the entire project, the choice for Fireworks was the most optimal.

  2002 > 2003
  Belgian Government

  www.belgium.be (Belgian Federal Portal)
  My roles:
- Ergodesigner
- Lead webdesigner / Design consultant

  Agencies:
Accenture / DAD (Digital Age Design) / CSC / Belgacom

  Description:
For the first Belgian portal, at that time the biggest and most expensive web project in Belgian history, I became part of the team of consultancy agency Accenture in Brussels for over half a year. I worked in duo with Jean-Marc Rodelet, the Usability Expert and former Director of the Design Department of D.A.D. (a few years before they became LBi Belgium). Our task was to determine the site's ergonomy (logic of the navigation, wireframing preliminary page lay-outs, etc...). To achieve the best results possible I often accompanied Jean-Marc to work meetings with consultancy teams at Accenture and with representatives of different government cabinets. In a second phase my collaboration with Jean-Marc on usabilty and ergonomy resulted in proto versions of the designs (or "pumped up" wireframes, if you like) to serve as guides during the actual design phase later on.

After a design contest with two other designer from DAD, I was eventually also selected to do the design phase itself. At that point my role became that of Lead Webdesigner with the task of creating a look & feel that could by concensus be accepted by all the decision takers. Since there were many and they often had conflicting ideas and desires, the main challenge was to come up with decent designs that were "somewhere in the middle".

Because of the fruitful collaboration within the team of Accenture I was later also asked to design additional websites for the Belgian Government, such as the website for the 2004 Elections, the Tax-On-Web website for the Ministry of Finance and the website for the launch of the Belgian eID-cards (and the design for the print on the actual eID-cards themselves).

  Used software and motivation:
Because of the many iterations and frequent change requests, Fireworks was the fastest and really also the only viable option to get everything done in time. It's on huge projects like this that the intuitive interface and the time-saving workflow offers the biggest benefits.
